- Scientific Name: Acanthocybium solandri
- Average Weight: 100 - 182 lbs.
- Location & Habitat: The wahoo is distributed worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. In the Atlantic Ocean, it is found from the North American coast. In the north Atlantic off the Carolinas and Bermuda, the abundance of this fish is highly seasonal, being more abundant during the warmer summer months.
- Biology: The maximum size for the wahoo is 98 in. total length, with a maximum weight of 182 lb. Typically, individuals attain a size of 39 to 66 in. After reaching a length of 38-41 in, individuals grow at a rate of 1.2-1.5 inches per month. Latitude appears to influence size, with average weight increasing with distance from the equator. Wahoo reach maturity between 1 and 2 years of age, depending upon location and sex. Wahoo's can live up to or more than 5-6 years of age.
- Physical Description: The wahoo is a slender fish with a body covered with scales. Jaws are elongated to form an almost beak-like snout; the teeth are triangular and finely serrated. Two dorsal fins are present; the first is several times the length of the second. These fins are followed by 8 or 9 finlets. The anal fin is below the second dorsal fin and is also succeeded by 9 finlets. The pelvic fins are situated below the pectoral fins. The caudal peduncle is narrow and contains three sets of keels. Small scales cover the body and no anterior corselet is present. Lateral line runs the length of the body, curving under the first dorsal fin. A swim bladder is present. The body is dark blue or green above, with 24 or more wavy cobalt blue bars running vertically along the sides. The belly and lower sides are silver.
