- Fishmount Species Information
- Scientific Name: Alectis ciliaris
- Average Weight: 22 lbs. - 24 lbs.
- Location & Habitat: The African Pompano live in tropical waters. They prefer water temperatures between 65º F and 80º F . They have been caught on the east and west coast of the US, South America, and Africa. Also can be found in the Indian Ocean as well as Asia, Australia and several Pacific Islands. The species reside in depths less than 328 ft. It's diet consists of different crustaceans and small fishes. The young prefer shallow reefs. Adult African Pompano's can be found over shallow reefs as well, but tend to work deeper as they grow. Best fishing grounds are usually around deep wrecks.
- Biology: This beautiful silver and blue fish grows to a length of 5 feet but are normally in the 18 to 24 inch range and it can grow to 50 pounds with 20 to 30 pounds common in Florida. The adult African pompano is very similar in appearance to the other members of the Genus Alectis, where someone with a trained eye is needed to separate the three. However the juveniles are easily identified due to their long, thread-like dorsal and anal fin tips, which are thought to discourage predators.
- Physical Description: A large, flattened fish with silvery sides and a distinctive blunt, sloped head. Forward rays of the dorsal and anal fins are very long and threadlike in young fish, and these "streamers" sometimes hang on until adulthood, although they usually are lost as the fish grows.
