This is why no two mounts are ever exactly alike and explains the differences you may see in the coloration of the various mounts. The Arctic charr only spawns every two to four years, once the reproductive organs have redeveloped from the last season. The breeding behaviour of the Arctic charr varies greatly between populations, with some individuals spawning in freshwater lakes after migrating from the sea. Spawning usually takes place onto a rocky or gravelly substrate. The male Arctic charr sometimes build a nest, which can be up to 2m or 3m in diameter, where it spawns with several females.Males become very territorial during the spawning season.

The back is dark with a brownish or olive cast. The sides are lighter, fading to a pale belly. The overall color may be brown, yellow, gold, orange, or red. As the char approaches spawning, the spots, belly, and fins take on a bright orange, red, or gold cast, and the lower fins have white leading edges. The entire body may become golden or orange. Spawning colors are more exaggerated in males than in females."
