This is why no two mounts are ever exactly alike and explains the differences you may see in the coloration of the various mounts. - Fishmount Species Information
- Scientific Name:Lepomis macrochirus
- Average Weight: 0.75 - 4.5 lbs.
- Location & Habitat: The Bluegill lives in streams, rivers, lakes, and ponds. It usually hides around, or inside, old treestumps and other underwater structures. It can live in either deep or very shallow water, and will often move back and forth, depending on the time of day or season. Bluegills also like to find shelter among water plants and in the shade of trees along banks.
- Biology: Bluegills can grow up to 12 inches long and about 4 1/2 pounds.Female Bluegills will lay up to 50,000 eggs in a nest dug into the bottom of a shallow area. The males will guard the nest and the fry when they are born. Bluegills are the most common fish caught by fishermen in Northern Virginia. They are easy to catch because they will eat so many different things; such as earthworms, crickets, grasshoppers, even people-food like bread and corn. Bluegills act as hosts for several parasites, including Eastern Lamp Mussels and The Big Red Worm, neither of which does the Bluegill much harm.
- Physical Description: The bluegill is know for the darkened spot that it has on the posterior edge of the gills and base of the dorsal fin. The sides of its head and chin are a dark shade of blue. It usually contains 4-8 vertical bars on the sides of its body, but these stripes are not always distinct. It has a yellowish breast and abdomen, with the breast of the breeding male being a bright orange. The bluegill has three anal spines, 11 anal fin rays, 12 dorsal fin spines, 11 dorsal rays, and 12 pectoral rays. They are characterized by their deep, laterally compressed bodies. They have a terminal mouth, ctenoid scales, and a lateral line that is arched upward anteriorly.
